Birkenstock Sole Falling Off — What To Do
A Birkenstock sole that's separating or falling off is one of the most common repair issues we see — and one of the most fixable. The adhesive bond between the outer sole and the cork midsole weakens over time, particularly in hot humid climates where heat softens adhesives and moisture penetrates the bond line. The good news is that sole separation caught at the right stage is a straightforward repair. Caught too late — after the cork has absorbed damage from unprotected contact with the ground — it becomes a more involved job.
The Village Cobblery & Provisions has been repairing Birkenstock sole separation since 1983. We resole using genuine Birkenstock replacement soles bonded correctly with proper adhesive and pressure. Not a glue job. A proper resole.
Why Birkenstock Soles Separate
The outer sole on a Birkenstock is bonded to the cork midsole with adhesive. Several factors weaken that bond over time:
- Heat — particularly in hot climates or from leaving sandals in a hot car, which softens and eventually breaks down the adhesive
- Moisture — water penetrating the bond line from the outside edge, particularly in wet climates or from repeated exposure to water
- Age — adhesive breaks down over time regardless of climate or use
- Mechanical stress — flexing of the sole through normal walking eventually fatigues the bond at the flex point
The separation typically starts at the heel or toe edge — the areas that flex most with each step — and works inward from there. If you catch it at the edge-separation stage, a resole is clean and straightforward. If the sole has separated across the full footprint and the cork has been exposed to ground contact, the cork may need attention as well.
What To Do Right Now
If your sole is actively separating but hasn't fully detached, don't try to reglue it yourself. Consumer adhesives — including shoe goo and super glue — are not the right materials for this repair and make a proper resole significantly harder to perform afterward. The residue from improper adhesive has to be removed before a proper resole can be done, which adds time and cost.
The best immediate action is to stop wearing the pair until it's repaired. Every step on a separating sole flexes the bond further and increases the area of separation. If the sole has partially detached, a rubber band or tape wrapped around the shoe to hold the sole in contact during shipping is sufficient.
Repair Options and Pricing
- Resole — $75 (replaces the outer sole with a genuine Birkenstock replacement)
- New Footbed + Resole — $115 (if the cork midsole has also been damaged)
- Cork Sealing — $15 (recommended at the time of resole to protect the newly exposed cork)
Mail-In Resole Service
We accept mail-in resoles from anywhere in the US. Contact us first with photos of the separation so we can assess the extent of the damage and give you an accurate quote. Then pack your sandals securely — use a rubber band or tape to hold the sole in place during shipping — and ship via USPS Priority Mail. Most resoles are completed within approximately two weeks of receiving your shoes.
Return shipping is the customer's responsibility and will be confirmed before we ship back. We recommend insuring your outgoing shipment for its replacement value.
