A Shop Worth Stopping For
The Village Cobblery & Provisions has been on Highway 1 in Gualala since 1983. For over forty years this shop has been the place on the Mendocino Coast where people bring the shoes they actually care about — the boots that finally broke in right, the Birkenstocks that have logged a thousand miles, the dress shoes worth saving.
In January 2025, the shop passed to new ownership. Same address, same commitment to genuine craftsmanship, new energy behind the counter.
The Cobblery
There are fewer working cobblers in the United States every year, and most of what passes for shoe repair is just replacing insoles or gluing a sole back on. We do the real work — resoling, heel replacement, welt repair, footbed replacement, cork sealing, stitching, stretching, cleaning and conditioning. If a pair of shoes is worth saving, we'll tell you honestly whether we can save them and what it will cost.
We specialize in Birkenstock repair and use only genuine Birkenstock replacement parts. We also accept mail-in repairs from anywhere in the US — so the distance between you and a good cobbler doesn't have to be the reason a great pair gets thrown away.
The Pantry
The pantry came out of twenty years in the food industry and a genuine conviction that the Mendocino Coast deserves better than what's on the shelf at a standard grocery store.
What's in the pantry was chosen because it belongs there — because it's made by someone who cares how it's produced, because it tastes like nothing you'll find at a chain retailer, and because it's the kind of thing you buy once, love, and come back for. Tinned fish from Portugal and Scandinavia. Craft chocolate from the Scottish Highlands. Single-origin spices. Artisan hot sauces. Heritage grains. Heirloom rices. Olive oils worth drizzling.
The selection rotates. We bring in what's interesting and worth carrying, and we order in small quantities — which means the shelf is always changing and what's here today may not be here next month.
