Carolina Gold is the oldest heirloom rice grown in the Americas — first planted in the Carolina lowlands in 1685, prized by chefs and traders for centuries, then nearly lost to history. Tidewater Grain Co. brought it back. Based in Oriental, North Carolina, they are the first rice farmers in the state in over 120 years, growing and milling Carolina Gold on their own farm from seed to bag.
Al Spruill, a fifth-generation farmer, and Tommy Wheeler started Tidewater Grain in 2018 with a focus on heirloom grains done right. Non-hybridized and non-GMO, this rice has a nutty richness and a texture that holds up — equally at home as a simple side, a risotto, or a slow-cooked rice dish. Cook it fluffy or let it go creamy. It rewards both.
