Birkenstock doesn't repair worn sandals for free. Their warranty covers manufacturing defects — stitching failures, hardware defects, materials that fail under normal use. It doesn't cover a sole that's worn smooth after three seasons of daily wear. That's not a defect. That's use.
When the sole is gone and the footbed is compressed, you have two options: buy a new pair or have the pair you own rebuilt. Here's what that costs, what it includes, and how to decide which service your pair actually needs.
What Birkenstock repair costs at Village Cobblery
Every price below includes complimentary cork sealing, conditioning, and free return shipping. There are no add-on fees beyond what's listed.
Resole — $75. Replaces the worn outsole with a genuine Birkenstock replacement sole. The right service when the sole has worn down but the footbed is still structurally sound — the arch support is still there, the cork isn't crumbling, the footbed hasn't compressed flat. This is the most common service for pairs that see heavy seasonal use but get put away before they're completely worn out.
New Footbed + Resole — $115. Replaces both the worn footbed and the outsole with genuine Birkenstock replacement components. The right service when the footbed has compressed to the point where the arch support is gone, or when the cork has deteriorated enough that a sole alone won't fix the problem. For pairs with five or more years of regular wear, this is usually the honest answer.
Soft Sole Footbed + Resole — $130. The same complete rebuild as above using the soft footbed variant — more cushioning underfoot with the same arch support and cork midsole construction. The right choice for people who already know they prefer the soft footbed feel.
Vibram Woodstock Outsole Upgrade — $15 added to any resole. Replaces the stock Birkenstock EVA sole with a Vibram Woodstock rubber outsole. More durable, better grip, and significantly longer lasting than the stock sole. Worth considering for pairs you intend to keep for another decade.
Cork Repair — $10–25 added to qualifying orders. Stabilizes crumbling or deeply cracked cork before it deteriorates further. Complimentary cork sealing is included on all orders $75 and up — cork repair addresses more significant damage where the structure of the cork itself needs attention.
Buckle Replacement — $20 per buckle. For bent posts, failed pins, or corroded hardware.
How to know which service your pair needs
The most useful thing you can do before contacting us is flip your sandals over and look at the outsole, then look at the footbed from the side.
If the tread is worn smooth — especially under the heel and ball of the foot — the sole needs to come off. Whether you need just a resole or a full footbed replacement depends on what the footbed looks like.
If the footbed has compressed flat — if you can't see any remaining contour in the arch and heel cup when you look at the sandal from the side — it needs to be replaced. A resole alone on a flat footbed restores the traction but not the support.
If the cork edge is crumbling or deeply cracked — where pieces are breaking off or cracks flex open when you bend the sole — that needs to be addressed before the sole goes back on. Left alone, exposed deteriorating cork will keep breaking down under daily wear.

How repair cost compares to buying new
A new pair of classic Birkenstocks — Arizona, Boston, Mayari — runs $150–$200 depending on the style and material. Higher-end styles and limited editions go above that.
A resole at $75 is roughly 40–50% of replacement cost. A full footbed and resole at $115 is roughly 60–75% of replacement cost — and you keep the uppers you've already broken in.
That last part matters more than most people realize. The leather straps, the suede upper, the hardware — on a well-maintained pair these can last 15–20 years. The cork footbed and the outsole are the consumable parts. Replacing them is the same logic as replacing the tires on a car you otherwise intend to keep.
Beyond the math, Birkenstocks are one of the few shoes that genuinely improve with wear. The footbed molds to the shape of your foot over months of use. A broken-in pair fits in a way a new pair doesn't — and that fit is in the upper, not the footbed. A new footbed breaks in to your foot again just like the original did. The straps and the specific contour of the upper to your foot stay exactly the way they were.
What affects the final price
The prices above are the complete prices for standard services. The only thing that changes the quote is if additional damage is discovered during disassembly that wasn't visible in the initial photos — hidden cork damage underneath the sole, strap damage that only becomes apparent when the sandal is taken apart. In those cases we contact you before doing anything additional.
Multi-pair orders follow the same per-pair pricing. Two pairs coming in together doesn't change what each pair costs to repair.
What's included that most people don't expect
Every order $75 and up includes complimentary cork sealing, conditioning, and free return shipping. These aren't add-ons — they're included because doing a resole without sealing the cork edge is an incomplete repair, and conditioning the leather extends the life of the straps and upper significantly.
Free return shipping means the $75 resole price is the complete price to your door, regardless of where in the US you're shipping from.
