Yes. Birkenstock footbeds can be replaced — and doing so can make an old pair feel brand new.
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer surprises a lot of people. Birkenstock manufactures replacement footbeds as genuine parts, which means a skilled cobbler can swap out a worn footbed and restore the full support and comfort the shoe was designed to provide.
What is the footbed, exactly?
The Birkenstock footbed is the heart of the shoe. It's the contoured insole made of cork and latex that sits between your foot and the outer sole. It features a raised toe bar, deep heel cup, and arch support designed to encourage natural foot mechanics.
Over time, the footbed compresses and the suede lining wears thin. When the support structure starts to break down — when the heel cup no longer feels cushioned, or the arch feels flat — it's time to consider a Birkenstock footbed replacement.
Signs your footbed needs replacing
- The suede lining is worn smooth or through to the cork
- The heel cup has compressed and feels hard underfoot
- The arch support no longer feels supportive
- The cork has dried out or begun to crack on the sides
What the repair involves
A Birkenstock footbed replacement combined with a new sole — our most popular Birkenstock resole service — gives your sandals a complete structural rebuild. We use genuine Birkenstock replacement parts for all our repairs — not aftermarket substitutes.
The process takes approximately two weeks. We offer this service both in our shop in Gualala, California and through our mail-in Birkenstock repair service for customers across the US.
The cost
A new Birkenstock footbed replacement plus resole runs $115 at our shop — and includes complimentary cork sealing, conditioning, and free return shipping. Compare that to $150–$200 for a new pair of Birkenstocks — and you keep the uppers you've already broken in.
A resole without footbed replacement is $75 and includes the same complimentary cork sealing, conditioning, and free return shipping.
If you're unsure whether your footbed needs replacing or just a good clean and condition, feel free to send us a message and we'll take a look. See our full Birkenstock repair pricing for a complete brea
