Sojourner Truth courageously escaped slavery in 1826, and went on to become a leading voice for abolition, African-American rights, and womenβs rights.Β Sojourner traveled throughout the states and gave speeches with regards to her activism.Β When protesters threatened to burn down a hall in which she was supposed to give an upcoming speech, Sojourner replied, βThen I will speak upon the ashes.βΒ Β
